作品简介

《小杜丽》发表于1857年，以英国维多利亚时期伦敦著名的债务人监狱——马夏尔西狱为背景，讲述了“监狱之女”小杜丽辛酸坎坷的成长历程，揭开了男主人公克莱南背负的一部写满复仇与诡诈、压制与凄怆的暗黑家史。该书对维多利亚时代英国社会画面进行了广阔地描绘，深刻揭露了伪善外衣掩盖下资本家的贪婪本性和肮脏灵魂，无情嘲讽了官场的腐朽嘴脸，是狄更斯后期伟大的作品之一。

 

作者简介

查尔斯·狄更斯（Charles Dickens，1812-1870），19世纪英国伟大的批判现实主义作家，擅于描写生活在英国社会底层的“小人物”的生活遭遇，为英国批判现实主义文学的开拓和发展做出了卓越的贡献，对英国文学的发展影响深远。他一生作品丰厚，盛行至今，主要作品有《远大前程》《双城记》等。

那一夜她并不曾离开过他……他入睡了，她还坐在床边，间或屏住呼吸轻轻地吻他一下，悄声地用亲昵的话呼唤着。她间或站到一旁，免得挡住微弱的炉火，炉火映照了他沉睡时的脸，她注视着，心中纳闷，此刻他是否就是过去走运、幸福时候的模样……这想象如此深深地触动了她的内心。一想到那个时光，她又在他床前跪下来，心中祈祷，“哦，免他一死吧！哦，就让他留在我身边吧！哦，瞧一瞧我亲爱的爸爸，受尽苦难、遭受厄运、今非昔比的最最亲爱的爸爸！”

只是到了东方发白，使他有了庇护、有了勇气的时候，她才最后吻了他一下，离开了狭小的房间。待到她蹑手蹑脚下了楼梯，穿过空荡荡的院子，爬上自己的阁楼时，大墙外面没有炊烟的屋顶与远处乡间的小山，在清净的晨光中已经依稀可辨。她轻轻推开窗子，朝东方望着底下的监狱院子，大墙上的尖铁已经染红了，旭日喷薄着升上天空，那些尖铁便在阳光中显现出紫色的图案。尖铁可从未曾显得如此般尖锐、冷酷，铁栅也从未曾显得如此般沉重，监狱的区域也从未曾显得如此般郁闷、窄小。她想象着波涛翻滚的河川上的日出，想象着辽阔大海上的日出，想象着优美多姿的景色中的日出，想象着百鸟苏醒、林木呼啸的大森林中的日出；她低头俯视那旭日普照的活人的坟墓，那里有她的父亲，他度过了二十三个年头，于是她心头的悲伤与怜悯迸发了，她说道：“没有，没有，我一生中从未见过他！”

She never left him all that night… she sat by him in his sleep, at times softly kissing him with suspended breath, and calling him in a whisper by some endearing name. At times she stood aside, so as not to intercept the low fire-light, and, watching him when it fell upon his sleeping face, wondered did he look now at all as he had looked when he was prosperous and happy… At the thought of that time, she kneeled beside his bed again, and prayed, ‘O spare his life! O save him to me! O look down upon my dear, long-suffering, unfortunate, much-changed, dear dear father!’

Not until the morning came to protect him and encourage him, did she give him a last kiss and leave the small room. When she had stolen down-stairs, and along the empty yard, and had crept up to her own high garret, the smokeless housetops and the distant country hills were discernible over the wall in the clear morning. As she gently opened the window, and looked eastward down the prison yard, the spikes upon the wall were tipped with red, then made a sullen purple pattern on the sun as it came flaming up into the heavens. The spikes had never looked so sharp and cruel, nor the bars so heavy, nor the prison space so gloomy and contracted. She thought of the sunrise on rolling rivers, of the sunrise on wide seas, of the sunrise on rich landscapes, of the sunrise on great forests where the birds were waking and the trees were rustling; and she looked down into the living grave on which the sun had risen, with her father in it, three-and-twenty years, and said, in a burst of sorrow and compassion, ‘No, no, I have never seen him in my life!’
