略谈《战争与和平》（列夫·托尔斯泰）

我在最优越的生活环境里，花了五年连续不断的艰巨劳动，写成了这部作品。值此出版之际，我想在序言里说明我对它的看法，以消除读者可能产生的误解。我希望读者不要在我的书里看出和寻找我不想、也不会表达的东西，而把注意力集中到我要表达的东西上……

第一，《战争与和平》是一部什么样的作品？它不是传奇，更不是长诗，尤其不是历史纪事。《战争与和平》是作者想借以表达和能够在其中表达他所要表达的内容的那种形式。作者蔑视艺术散文作品流行形式的这种声明，如果出自凭空臆想、缺乏先例的话，那就会显得狂妄自大。事实上，从普希金时代起，俄罗斯文学中不仅有许多背离欧洲形式的实例，而且找不到一个与此相反的例子。从果戈里的《死魂灵》到陀思妥耶夫斯基的《死屋手记》，在俄罗斯文学的新时期里，没有一部稍稍超越平庸的艺术散文的作品，采用的形式是传奇、长诗或中篇小说……

安德烈公爵不仅知道自己要死，而且感觉到正在死去，已经死了一半。他有一种超脱尘世、轻松愉快的奇异感觉……

他以前害怕生命结束。他有两次极其痛苦地体验过死的恐惧，如今已不再有这样的感觉了。

那一次榴弹在他面前像陀螺似的打转，他望着留茬地、灌木丛和天空，知道他正面对着死神，那时他第一次产生这样的感觉。他负伤后清醒过来，精神上仿佛顿时卸下生活的重担，那朵永恒的、自由的、不受现实生活束缚的爱之花开放了，他不再怕死，也不再想到死。

在他负伤后处于孤独和半昏迷状态时，他越深入思考那向他启示的永恒的爱，他就越摈弃尘世的生活。爱世间万物，爱一切人，永远为了爱而自我牺牲，那就是说不爱哪个具体的人，不过尘世的生活。他越领会这种爱的精神，就越摈弃尘世生活，越彻底消除那不存在爱的生死之间的鸿沟。他第一次想到死的时候，他对自己说：死就死吧，死了更好。

但就在安德烈公爵死去的一瞬间，他记起他在睡觉；也就在他死去的一瞬间，他挣扎着醒过来。

“是的，这就是死。我死了，我也就醒了。是的，死就是觉醒！”他的心灵豁然开朗了，那张至今遮蔽着未知世界的帷幕在他心灵前面揭开了。他觉得内心被束缚的力量获得了解放，身上那种奇妙的轻松感也不再消失。

Not only did Prince Andrew know he would die, but he felt that he was dying and was already half dead. He was conscious of an aloofness from everything earthly and a strange and joyous lightness of existence...

Formerly he had feared the end. He had twice experienced that terrible tormenting fear of death -- the end -- but now he no longer understood that fear.

He had felt it for the first time when the shell span like a top before him, and he looked at the fallow field, the bushes and the sky, and knew that he was face to face with death. When he came to himself after being wounded and the flower of eternal, unfettered love had instantly unfolded itself in his soul as if freed from the bondage of life that had restrained it, he no longer feared death, and ceased to think about it.

During the hours of solitude, suffering, and partial delirium he spent after he was wounded, the more deeply he penetrated into the new principle of eternal love revealed to him, the more he unconsciously detached himself from earthly life. To love everything and everybody and always so sacrifice oneself for love, meant not to love anyone, not to live this earthly life. And the more imbued he became with that principle of love, the more he renounced life and the more completely he destroyed that dreadful barrier which -- in the absence of such love -- stands between life and death. When during those first days he remembered that he would have to die, he said to himself: ‘Well, what of it? So much the better!’

But at the instant he died, Prince Andrew remembered that he was asleep, and at the very instant he died, having made an effort, he awoke.

‘Yes, it was death! I died -- and woke up. Yes, death is an awakening!’ And all at once it grew light in his soul and the veil that had till then concealed the unknown was lifted from his spiritual vision. He felt as if powers till then confined within him had been liberated, and that strange lightness did not again leave him.
