群众出版社于1981年8月出版的《福尔摩斯探案全集》以其译本精良深受广大读者好评。小说中惊险的情节、科学的侦探方法以及严密的逻辑推理，引起了中国广大读者极大的阅读兴趣。自1981年问世以来，该书多次重印，成为全国销量最大的《福尔摩斯探案全集》，成为中国读者最为熟悉和推重的最佳版本。1991年，该书荣获第一届全国优秀外国文学图书奖。

 

译者简介

欧阳达，江西南昌人。1946年毕业于成都华西大学外文系，曾任江西省善后救济分署英文专员。新中国成立后，曾任荷兰驻华使团英文翻译、北京市外交人员服务局英文翻译，副译审。

刘树瀛，河北人。1951年毕业于南开大学西语系。1952年1月参军，先后担任华北军区敌工科、军委敌工部及志愿军俘虏管训处教育科英文翻译。1954年转任北京市公安局群众书店编辑部编辑。1956年转任公安部群众出版社编辑。1960年转做翻译工作。1963年至1988年转做教育工作，先后在承德一中及承德民族师范学院任教并被评为副教授。主要译著有《巴斯克维尔的猎犬》等。

一阵儿急速的脚步声打破了沼地的寂静。我们蹲在乱石之间，专心致志地盯着面前那段上沿呈银白色的雾墙。脚步声愈来愈响了，我们所期待的人穿过浓雾，就好像穿过一层帘幕似的在那里走着。当他走出了浓雾，站在被星光照耀着的清朗的夜色中的时候，他惊慌地向四周望了望，然后又迅速地顺着小路走来，经过了离我们隐蔽之处很近的地方以后，就向着我们背后那漫长的山坡走去了。他一边走，一边心神不宁地向后张望着。

“嘘！”福尔摩斯嘘了一声，我听到了尖细而清脆的扳开枪机的声音，“注意，它来了！”

由徐徐前进的雾墙里不断传来了轻轻的吧嗒吧嗒的声音。那云状的浓雾距我们藏匿的地方不到五十码远，我们三个人都死死地朝着那里瞪大着眼睛，不知道那里将出现什么可怕的东西。我当时正在福尔摩斯的肘旁，我朝他的脸上看了一眼。他面色苍白，但显出狂喜的神情，双眼在月光的照耀下闪闪发光。忽然间，他两眼猛地向前死死盯住了一点，双唇因为惊异而大张着。就在这时，莱斯特雷德发出一声惊恐的呼叫，然后就伏在地上了。我跳了起来，我那已经变得不灵活的手紧抓着手枪。在雾影中向我们蹿来的那个形状可怕的东西吓得我魂飞天外。这确实是一只猎犬，一只黑得像煤炭似的大猎犬，但并不是一只人们平常看到过的那种狗。它那张着的嘴巴里向外喷着火，眼睛也亮得像冒火一样，头部、颈毛和脖子下部都在闪烁发光。这个突然从雾障里向我们蹿过来的黑色躯体，有着狰狞的狗脸，就是疯子在最怪诞的梦里也不会看到比这家伙更凶恶、更可怕和更像魔鬼的东西了。

 

A sound of quick steps broke the silence of the moor. Crouching among the stones, we stared intently at the silver-tipped bank in front of us. The steps grew louder, and through the fog, as through a curtain, there stepped the man whom we were awaiting. He looked round him in surprise as he emerged into the clear, starlit night. Then he came swiftly along the path, passed close to where we lay, and went on up the long slope behind us. As he walked he glanced continually over either shoulder, like a man who is ill at ease.

‘Hist!’ cried Holmes, and I heard the sharp click of a cocking pistol. ‘Look out! It’s coming!’

There was a thin, crisp, continuous patter from somewhere in the heart of that crawling bank. The cloud was within fifty yards of where we lay, and we glared at it, all three, uncertain what horror was about to break from the heart of it. I was at Holmes’s elbow, and I glanced for an instant at his face. It was pale and exultant, his eyes shining brightly in the moonlight. But suddenly they started forward in a rigid, fixed stare, and his lips parted in amazement. At the same instant Lestrade gave a yell of terror and threw himself face downwards upon the ground. I sprang to my feet, my inert hand grasping my pistol, my mind paralysed by the dreadful shape which had sprung out upon us from the shadows of the fog. A hound it was, an enormous coal-black hound, but not such a hound as mortal eyes have ever seen. Fire burst from its open mouth, its eyes glowed with a smouldering glare, its muzzle and hackles and dewlap were outlined in flickering flame. Never in the delirious dream of a disordered brain could anything more savage, more appalling, more hellish, be conceived than that dark form and savage face which broke upon us out of the wall of fog.
