译者简介

石枕川，知名苏俄文学翻译家，1931年生，江苏宜兴人，曾任解放军外语学院俄语系教授、硕士生导师。1953年自哈尔滨外语专科学校毕业后，即南归苏州，在江苏师范学院（现为苏州大学）外语系任教。主要译著（包括合译）有《围困》《当代苏联中短篇小说集》《阿勃拉莫夫中短篇小说选》《找到面目的人》等。

在屠格涅夫的著作中，再没有比《父与子》一书更引起人的注意与辩论的了。自这部书出版后，他在欧洲的名誉隆重了、伟大了许多；但在他的本国十个人中有九个是对这本书反感的……这部书出版的时候是一八六二年。那时正是新旧派竞争很激烈的时候。新派的虚无主义者突起于知识阶级中，以破坏一切旧的道德、旧的信仰、旧的艺术、旧的法律为口号。旧派的感情主义者、美术主义者，则极力与之抗衡，以保存他们所信奉的、因袭的东西。屠格涅夫在这部书中，以彼得罗维奇代表旧派的父代，以巴扎罗夫代表新派的子代，父子两代的冲突——思想的冲突——就以彼得罗维奇与巴扎罗夫之冲突代表之……这都是实在的情形。巴扎罗夫这个人据说也是实有其人……从艺术上来讲，他的成绩也是极高……正如美国批评家菲尔甫（L. Phelps）所说的：“《父与子》是表现六十年代的俄国政治家的图画，而留遗后世以一个不朽的艺术作品。”……

半小时后，尼古拉·彼得罗维奇走进花园，来到他最喜爱的凉亭里。他心事重重，第一次如此分明地察觉出父子间的分歧，而且这种分歧将来还要越来越大。是啊，他每年冬天去彼得堡，整天坐在那里研读最新的文章，听年轻人议论，在炽热的议论中为能插上几句话而高兴，这一切都白做了。他在想：“哥哥说我们是正确的，且把自尊自爱心理搁在一边不说，他们比起我们来离真理要更远些，但与此同时，他们却具有某种我们所没有的东西……青春吗？不，不单单是青春。优势是否在于比我们少些贵族习气呢？”

尼古拉·彼得罗维奇低下头去，用手抚脸。

“可是，诗歌也要抛弃吗？”他又想，“艺术、大自然……也要排斥吗？”

他环视四周，像是要弄明白怎么可以排斥大自然。天色已晚，太阳躲进了离花园半俄里远的一小片山杨林里，长长的山杨林影横卧在寂静的田野上。一个农民跨匹白马，正从容不迫地从阴暗的林边小径经过，人影如此分明，连他肩上的补丁也都看得一清二楚，白马则欢快地迈着小步子。阳光射在林丛里，把山杨树照得暖暖的，仿佛成了松树干，连那叶子也变得苍翠欲滴。而在山杨树顶上是淡蓝的天空和粉红色晚霞。燕子在高处飞翔，风儿歇了，晚归的蜜蜂懒懒地在丁香花丛中嗡嗡，一群蚊蚋围着一根高耸的孤枝飞舞……

Half an hour later, Nicholas Petrovich was in the garden, sauntering in the direction of his favourite arbour. He was oppressed with sad thoughts. For the first time he had clearly realized the gulf that separated him from his son, and he had a foreboding that with each day the gap would widen. Therefore, he felt that he had merely wasted his time when, as he had sometimes done during his winter stay in Petersburg, he had spent whole days poring over the latest books; he had merely wasted his time in listening to the young men talk and in feeling elated at his own success in inserting a word or two into their heated discussions. “My brother maintains that we are right,” he thought, “and discarding all personal vanity it seems to me also that these young men are further removed from the truth, and yet I cannot help feeling that they have something we lack, an advantage over us... Is it their youth? No, it can’t be only a question of youth. Perhaps their advantage lies in their having fewer traces of the serf-master in their character?”

Nicholas Petrovich lowered his head and passed a hand over his face.

“But to reject poetry?” he asked himself again. “To lack all feeling for art, for nature...”

And he gazed about him as though he wished to grasp how it was possible not to share the feeling for nature. The evening was already creeping on: the sun had hidden behind a small aspen grove, some half a mile away from the garden, and its shadow spread endlessly over the motionless fields. A peasant was riding a white horse at a trot along the dark, narrow path that skirted the grove: though he was riding in the shadow, his horse’s hooves could be perceived flashing up and down with pleasing precision. The rays of the sun, for their part, filtered into the grove and, forcing their way through the thicket, drenched the trunks of the aspen trees in such a suffusion of light that they began to assume the appearance of pine trunks, and their foliage showed blue beneath an azure sky, slightly tinged by the beams of the setting sun. The larks were soaring on high; the breeze had quite died away; belated bees were buzzing lazily and drowsily among the lilac; a column of swarming gnats were crowding over an isolated projecting branch...
