INTRODUCTION(节选自A Midsummer Night’s Dream)
...Certianly, if you want gritty realism, you’ll find little of it in the text of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Instead, you find fairies, autocrats, rural buffoons, and a bizarre mixture of ancient and modern, of what is supposedly the legendary Grecian past and rural Elizabethan England. It’s a surrealistic world in which the magic wielded in the inner action extends onwards and outwards to what probably was a real-life wedding. Layers on layers, worlds within worlds: there is a recessive quality created by the craftily hierarchical plotting; and at the centre of the plot is that gross breach of hierarchy, when Bottom, his head transformed into that of an ass, is embraced in moonlight by Titania, queen of immortals...

HELENA How happy some o’er other some can be!
Through Athens I am thought as fair as she,
But what of that? Demetrius thinks not so:
He will not know what all but he do know.
And as he errs, doting on Hermia’s eyes,
So I, admiring of his qualities.
Things base and vile, holding no quantity.
Love can transpose to form and dignity.
Love looks not with the eyes, but with the mind:
And therefore is winged Cupid painted blind.
Nor hath Love’s mind of any judgment taste:
Wings and no eyes figure unheedy haste.
And therefore is Love said to be a child,
Because in choice he is so oft beguiled.
As waggish boys in game themselves forswear,
So the boy Love is perjured every where.
For, ere Demetrius looked on Hermia’s eyne,
He hailed down oaths that he was only mine.
And when this hail some heat from Hermia felt,
So he dissolved, and show’rs of oaths did melt.
I will go tell him of fair Hermia’s flight:
Then to the wood will he tomorrow night
Pursue her; and for this intelligence,
If I have thanks, it is a dear expense:
But herein mean I to enrich my pain,
To have his sight thither and back again.

Romantic criticism, of which Shakespeare is the central figure, invented many of the modes of modern criticism. It is also distinct from many contemporary academic norms. This book presents the main currents of these exciting but relatively little known engagements with Shakespeare. It illustrates the meaning the Romantics took from Shakespeare. It studies the critical practices and theories that evolved in England, Germany and France as well as the English stage and the relations between performance criticism and scholarship.
